Spinal Arthritis What Is It?
Spinal arthritis is a term that actually refers to a number of issues that can result in pain, inflammation, stiffness, and more in the joints of the back and neck. Spinal arthritis generally is found in the facet or vertebral joints of the spine which allow us to bend backwards, forwards, and side to side.
Spinal Arthritis Causes
The causes of it can vary, but often it can be attributed to a variety of factors that may include:
- Weight – Carrying extra pounds puts more stress on your spine and can contribute to the wearing down of spinal discs, sometimes resulting in arthritis of the spine.
- Age – As we get older, the body's cartilage naturally loses water content, which leads to a breakdown of cartilage and the bone–on–bone rubbing that causes. In fact, it's estimated that up to 90 percent of Americans over 55 suffer from this type of arthritis.
- Injury – Traumatic bodily injury can hasten the development of the condition and oftentimes can be a significant contributor to the severity of the symptoms.
- Gender – Men are just half as likely as women to have arthritis of the spine.
