Spinal Arthritis Surgery from Laser Spine Institute
Spinal arthritis surgery can be extremely effective at reducing osteoarthritis symptoms, but it is generally not recommended for the majority of sufferers. Most of the time, non-invasive treatment techniques, such as taking over-the-counter medicines and practicing special stretches and exercises, are sufficient for managing symptoms. In more advanced cases, prescription medicines may be needed.
It’s only in the most severe cases—in which a patient’s quality of life is greatly diminished by acute symptoms—that arthritis surgery is recommended. That’s because this procedure doesn’t permanently treat arthritis. There is no cure for the disease, and surgery generally just reduces the symptoms by removing damaged tissue that may be swollen and compressing nerve roots. Nerve compression is generally what causes the pain associated with spinal arthritis.
Traditional spinal arthritis surgery can be effective, but it requires hospitalization, general anesthesia, and large incisions—all of which can lead to complications. Also, because this procedure is quite invasive, it is generally followed by a long recovery period. However, there is another alternative. At Laser Spine Institute (LSI), we offer minimally invasive procedures that relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis with a lower risk of complications and a shorter recovery than traditional surgery. LSI’s procedures are also highly effective: more than 85% of our patients report an improvement in their quality of life within three months of the procedure.
