Spinal Arthritis in the Neck
Spinal arthritis in the neck, otherwise known as cervical spinal arthritis, is a condition in which the joints in this region, which includes vertebrae C1–C7, become inflamed. This inflammation is usually due to degeneration, which has a number of causes, and most times there is more than one culprit.
Some of these causes include:
- Age – As the body ages, cartilage in the spine loses water content and becomes more brittle, leading to arthritis.
- Injuries – Trauma from a car accident or another incident, even if it occurred years ago, can spur degeneration and inflammation and result in the development of arthritis in the neck. Wear and tear, such as that from regularly playing rough sports, can also contribute.
- Body weight – Excess pounds stress the body's joints, and while this affects the lower or lumbar part of the spine more, it can also contribute to the development of arthritis in the cervical spine.
- Genes – Some people are simply more likely to develop arthritis because of the genes passed down to them by their parents.
