Spinal Arthritis Causes
Spinal arthritis is an inflammation of spinal joints that causes, to some degree, painful symptoms for many people in the United States over the age of 55. It is a condition in which the cartilage between bones wears out, forcing the bones to rub against one another, which leads to general inflammation as well as problems like bone spurs and pinched nerves in many cases.
When the degeneration occurs to an extent that nerve roots or the spinal cord itself become impinged upon, spinal arthritis causes symptoms including:
- Pain
- Stiffness
- Limited range of motion
- Tingling or pins and needles
- Numbness
- Muscle weakness
Treatments for Spinal Arthritis Causes
Although spinal arthritis itself cannot be successfully treated, there are many options available to treat its symptoms. Conservative treatments for these symptoms include:
- Pain medication – over–the–counter and prescription
- Anti–inflammatory medication
- Hot and cold compresses
- Stretching
- Rest
- Exercise
If these conservative treatments fail to bring relief, then your doctor may recommend surgery as a final option. In this case, you should know that there is an alternative – a safe, proven approach – available to you. This alternative is endoscopic spine surgery, and it involves the use of tiny instruments to reach and treat the afflicted area. By minimizing the size of the incision and the trauma to the body, surgeons are able to provide relief to the patient with the use of local anesthesia rather than general, and a much faster recovery time of just weeks as compared to months with open back and neck procedures.
For more information on spinal arthritis causes, or the minimally invasive procedures we offer to treat symptoms of this condition, contact Laser Spine Institute. We'll provide you with a complimentary review of your MRI or CT scan and let you know if you're a candidate for one of these endoscopic procedures.
