Neck Arthritis Exercises
When you live with the stiffness and pain of neck arthritis, exercises may be able to offer you some relief. Exercises can help build up muscles around the site of the arthritis, which can ease pressure on the affected joints, add flexibility to relieve stiffness, and help prevent future injuries that can compound arthritis pain. Of course, before attempting any exercises for neck arthritis, you should consult your doctor or physical therapist to ensure that the exercises you are considering are safe and appropriate for your condition.
Here are a few popular neck arthritis exercises to discuss with your doctor:
- Slowly turn your head side to side two to four times. Next, nod up and down slowly in an exaggerated fashion so your chin tucks into your chest when you look down and you can see the ceiling when you look up. Repeat two to four times. Finally, slowly tilt your head sideways to one shoulder and then tilt it sideways to the other. Repeat two to four times.
- Place your hands on your forehead and gently push your head against them for five seconds. Repeat the exercise with your hands behind your head, and then with your hands to the left and right of your head, always pushing toward the hand.
- With your arms at your sides and your elbows bent, roll your shoulders behind you like you are trying to make your shoulder blades meet in the middle of your back. Do this 10 to 15 times and then roll your shoulders forward 10 to 15 times.
If these types of neck arthritis exercises don’t relieve your pain—and other conservative treatments like pain relief medication, anti-inflammatory medication, hot and cold compresses, and chiropractic care also don’t work—then you may want to consider a minimally invasive treatment from Laser Spine Institute (LSI). We perform several outpatient procedures that can often alleviate symptoms associated with neck arthritis.
