Arthritis Treatment

How Do You Determine If You Are Suffering From Arthritis

There are a number of signs and symptoms that will give you a clear indication whether you may be suffering from arthritis.  If you experience or demonstrate any of these symptoms, you should meet with your doctor to have a medical examination and diagnosis. Should your doctor diagnose arthritis, there is a variety of arthritis treatments available to you. While in most cases, there is no cure for arthritis, the following arthritis remedies have been proven to offer arthritis relief.  Of course treatment for arthritis varies on the form of arthritis you are suffering from.

Most Common Signs and Symptoms of Arthritis

  • Pain and/or stiffness in one or more of your joints
  • Lumps or nodules in the end and middle joints of your fingers
  • Inflammation or tenderness in one or more of your joints

Treatment for Arthritis

As mentioned above, most forms of arthritis do not have a cure, however through pain management and arthritis remedies, symptoms may be reduced and thereby find arthritis relief.

There are various forms of therapy and programs that your doctor will discuss with you to find the one that best suits your lifestyle.  This is dependent on the form of arthritis you suffer from.

Exercise, physiotherapy and medication have been found to be the most effective types of treatment.  Depending on the level of activity you were at prior to developing symptoms of arthritis, will determine the exercise program designed for you. As well, depending on your range of motion, physiotherapy may be helpful in regaining your strength and flexibility and improving your overall range of motion.  Below, we will provide a high level overview of these types of arthritis treatments.

Exercise - your doctor will work with you to determine an appropriate exercise program designed to suit your lifestyle and activity level. It is important to build (or rebuild if you were an active person) and maintain muscle tone. Walking is an activity that the majority of people are able to start with and in fact, has been proven to be a very effective form of exercise on many levels.  Aquatic exercises are also very effective and are found to be of very low impact on the joints.

Physiotherapy - this method of therapy is often recommended for those requiring a tailored exercise program that can be worked on both at home and with the physiotherapist. Strengthening and flexibility exercises are key to finding arthritis relief. Massage may be incorporated in this therapy.

Medication - there are different types of medications recommended or administered depending on the form of arthritis you suffer from and the signs and symptoms you are experiencing. Most common are those of the over the counter type such as Tylenol, Advil or Aspirin. Some may require anti-inflammatory medications, while others may need cortisone shots or other steroidal medications.  For any of these, your doctor will determine what is best suited for you depending on a number of factors, medical condition and history being key in this recommendation.

Heat/Ice Therapy - depending on pain, stiffness, inflammation and tenderness, either heat or ice (cold) will offer arthritis relief.
Preventing Arthritis

As with all illnesses, prevention is key. There are some things that you can do to help prevent further progression of arthritis.

Prevent Arthritis

Weight control - Wear and tear on weight bearing joints such as your spine, hips and knees is more common when you are overweight. By maintaining a normal weight for your age and height, you can prevent these joints from further damage.

Avoid repetitive movement over an extended period of time. This applies to leisure sports or activities, as well as occupational duties. You may need to have your work environment ergonomically assessed and specific training or instruction may be required to adapt and prevent further damage.

If you have suffered from an injury proper medical care and advice in addition to physical therapy or rehabilitation will prevent further damage.
